Driving Safely - Driving Techniques, Driver Safety Aspects, Safe Driving Tips

As one is aware, there is generally lot of talk that goes on about defensive driving and safe driving techniques. We aren’t kidding you! Do not compromise on this aspect of your driving wherever you may be located.

The following are important aspects of driving safety that one should never be complacent about.

SEAT BELT AND SAFETY

If one wants to understand about the worth of the safety belt, he/she must understand the dynamics involved in case of an accident. There are three collisions in every motor vehicle accident.
The car collision- when the car dash at something, it comes to an abrupt halt, besides the car will also buckle and bend. Human collision- the person if he has not used the safety belt will collide with the steering wheel or other part of the vehicle. The person [unbelted] may dash against the other person also. In general the person sitting in the rear seat will come and dash the person sitting in the front seat. So the rear seat persons can be considered as projectiles moving at a high speed. Internal collision- even when the person stop moving forward in case of accident, the internal organs of the person will continue to move at high speed and dash against the skeleton or other internal organ. This is very serious as it may lead to fatal injuries.
In case the person is fastened with seat belt, the belts contribute to the distribution of rapid deceleration force to the stronger and larger part of the body such as shoulders, hip, and chest. The seatbelt also stretches little in order to increase the stopping distance of the body. The stopping distance between the belted person and the unbelted person is very important, as the same is the difference between the death and life.

SAFETY OF THE CHILD

One should keep always in mind that he/she should never keep the infant in the front seat, which is provided with air bag at passenger side. In case of accident the air bag will hit the front seat with force, which will hurt the infant very seriously and even kill the infant. The best place to place the infant is the rear seat preferably facing back.

SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE

The car must be prepared before every journey irrespective of the distance one wants to travel. The regular check ups and inspections of the following are compulsory.

1. Brakes, wiring, ignition, fan belts and hoses

2. Adjusting or changing the spark plug if required

3. Fuel, air, emission filters and PCV valve

4. Distributor inspection

5. Battery inspection

6. Inspecting the air, depth and sidewall wear of the tires

7. Inspection of the freeze line and antifreeze lever.

The car of yours must be tuned up periodically in order to ensure high responsiveness, gas mileage, brisk starts, and faster pick up.

ADVERSE DRIVING CONDITION HANDLING

Driving the car in winter [in slippery road], and at the time of rain, snow fall, icefall is extremely difficult. The best thing to at these times is to SLOW DOWN. Speed is of no use under these conditions. They’re few other things that can be tried during these difficult conditions. They are as follows:

1. At the time of driving the vehicle for long distances under snowy or icy or rainy condition one must carry materials that will keep you warm such as woolen socks, cap, blankets and mittens.

2. You need to drive the car slowly on curves. The steering and the brake must be handled softly.

3. One must drive the car on the tire marks of the previous vehicle.
4. In order to avoid hydroplaning, you have to keep the tires fully inflated and the treads of the tires must be in good condition. The tire should be replaced if required.
5. Never try to turn or apply brake suddenly as the car will start skidding if the road is slippery.

DRIVING THE CAR WITH IMPAIRED ABILITY / UNDER INFLUENCE

Irrespective of the condition of the surrounding never drive the car under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating substances. One of the main reasons for fatal accident is DUI. Incase you want to drink, have a person to drive the car who doesn’t drink.
